This is a lesson in what NOT to do. The other night I was cleaning out the fridge disposing of uneaten leftovers, using one of the greatest kitchen inventions, the garbage disposal. Well, after I fed the giant under the sink, I noticed my sinks backing up with water....oooops! Called for the hubby, who reminded me about 20 times throughout this ordeal that HE IS NOT A PLUMBER! Uh...no kidding?
Well, he obviously had no success in clearing things out. He checked everything, all the pipes clear back in to the wall, even ran a long coathanger through the pipe in the wall....nothing! Ok now, I'm really sweating....what have I done?
Well, we had plans the next day so we wouldn't be able to have anyone come in to fix it so, we had no choice but to leave it for now. We'll call someone when we get home. Only, when we got home, we were welcomed to a backed up sink of water which was now overflowing all over the counters, into the floor and backing up in to the dishwasher which was now overflowing as well! Oh, no, really...what have I done?
So, the repairman came, brought in this huge orange thing to fix our problems, all the while proceeding to tell me, "Yeah, one thing these little pipes and drains do not like is rice!" Rice? Did I tell him "rice"? No, I never said anything about rice! I never told him anything like that! But rice was what he said. How did he know? Then the flood of Mom always telling us when we were kids, "Be sure your sins will find you out!"
So all this mess caused from a few grains of rice (ok so maybe a few cups!) Everything out on the counters and on the floor.

That is good to know! And just a little sidenote - they don't like potato peelings either! Don't ask me how I know....
ReplyDeleteI found out about the potato peelings the hard way too. We never had a garbage disposal when I was growing up so I didn't know what you could and couldn't put in there! It's good to know about the rice - that's one I won't have to learn on my own!
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain. I have done this before - several times.. once even on Thanksgiving. we had one that didn't like spaghetti noodles. For inanimate objects, garbage disposals have definite likes and dislikes. I also accidently found out garbage disposals don't like wax either... so, I'm not a candle maker, ok!? Well, at least you know now. Keep your rice to yourself!
ReplyDeleteOMG!! That is crazy. I did this once not to long ago, but it wasn't rice but I think it may have been cornbread or the oatmeal.
ReplyDeleteI think it's all that grainy stuff that's good for us.
I wouldn't have wanted to be in your house during all that.lol!!
Uh, Sheri ... we eat rice everyday! I'm going to show this blogpage to Kirk and Lauren! Now, I'm worried about my pipes (both my internal ones and the ones in the kitchen!) I've been blog-free a few weeks so I'm catching up. I love all your pix and your Easter & scrap accounts. I want YOUR Easter Bunny to stop by my house!
