Color Inspiration
If you’re like me, I’m always looking for some fresh new color combinations for my layout. Sometimes I get tired of the same colors that we know always go together…looking for maybe a little something that will stretch me out of my box, so to speak.
I love color! I find that if I just open my eyes to the world around me, color is everywhere! A great source of color inspiration can be found in ads. Companies spend millions of dollars on advertising trying to sell their product. They know what will draw the eye in, what will catch the viewer and what will best promote their product.
It’s a great place to lift inspiration because they’ve already done the hard work (and spent the big money)! I love pulling color combinations from ads or even catalogs. For example, I found this ad from a recent Crate and Barrel catalog.
Just look at the gorgeous colors that just pop out on this ad. I created a color swatch from the ad to use for my layout. From the darkest gray, to pale gray all the way to the pink, it just works! The colors are complimentary and go together beautifully.
So I created my layout using the color swatch from the Crate and Barrel ad. Here it is:
On my layout, I used the dark purple as my background and added the two grays as a base. Then my complimentary colors of pink and orange were used more in the embellishment layers. I ended up with a great layout that I am very happy with. And surprisingly, this layout went extremely quick for me since the hard work of selecting colors was already done for me.
So, now when you feel like you’ve hit that creative wall, all you have to do is look around you and you can find inspiration everywhere. Trust me, you will never go shopping with the same eye! I get looks all the time for taking pictures of signs, displays and anything else I find inspiring! But that’s ok….I can live with that….anything for a great layout!
