Rick's parents came to dinner on Sunday after church and of course, as usual, I had to make a dessert for his dad. Well, I didn't have to but I know he always likes dessert after dinner so I was happy to oblige! I don't bake like this except when they come over. We don't normally eat like this but we sure do enjoy it when they're here! I made this Mississippi Mud Cake and it went over HUGE. I think Michael actually drooled when I brought it out. :>) Anyway, thought I'd just share the recipe with you. Enjoy!2 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 stick unsalted butter
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup cocoa
1/4 cup water
2 eggs
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 bag miniature marshmallows
Icing:
1 stick unsalted butter, softened
3 tablespoons cocoa
6 tablespoons milk
1 (1-pound) box confectioners' sugar
1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour a 13 by 9-inch baking pan.
Combine the sugar, salt, and flour in a large mixing bowl. Bring the butter, oil, cocoa, and 1/4 cup water to a boil in a saucepan. Add to the flour mixture.
Beat together the eggs, baking soda, buttermilk, and vanilla. Add to the chocolate mixture, mix well, and pour into the prepared pan. Bake for 25 minutes.
While the cake is baking, make the icing by melting the butter in the cocoa and milk over low heat. Bring the mixture to a boil, then remove from the heat. Stir in the confectioners' sugar. Slowly mix in the nuts and the vanilla. Take the cake from the oven, and when it cools a bit cover it with miniature marshmallows. Pour the warm icing over the cake and the marshmallows. Cool the cake before serving.

Oh my gosh, my mouth is watering! MMMMMMmmmmmmm, this was so yummy! I'm sure T and your mom are not thrilled about you sharing your recipes! LOL. Mike would have a heart attack if I just up and made this one day so thanks for sharing! :-)
ReplyDeleteYou all are making me sound like a witch. Let's just get this recipe thing straight right now....I do not mind sharing a recipes at all, it is a complement to me that someone wants it....the problem is people do not know recipe ettiquette...
ReplyDelete1.When someone asks for a recipe they should never make it and bring it to functions or circles that the person goes to as well, (i.e.,church,parties,family getogethers, etc.)It may just be that the original person might bring it to, and that would be like when you show up at prom and someone else has your dress on. Not good!!!!
2. Also, if you are living within the same vicinity of the person that gave it to you, again where you attend the same functions, if a third party asks for the same recipe, well, it's not really yours to give. If a family member asks for it that is not in the same circle that's fine. If a neighbor asks for it that doesn't is not in the same circle of friends...that's fine too.
So if my friend asks for a recipe and I give it and then I show up at a party or church and she has made it, then people get tired of the same thing and what if I brought it too. That would suck!!!!
3. It also sucks if you make a recipe and take it somewhere and you tell people that it is just something you threw together and take it on as yours. That is completely rude. Cause guess what? The person will eventually find out and probably will never share another recipe with you. I promise...that has happened quite a few times.
That is just as much as a lie.
4. What if the recipe is from a great gma or passed down to you as a family recipe and someone treats it with disrespect like that.
So there it is...those are my issues with sharing a recipes...I do love to share them but people don't know recipe etiquette or manners.
I have plenty to share...I personally do a lot of research, testing, purchasing, retesting, and tasting for what I do and all that work just goes out the window when people do this junk.
So if you can follow the recipe rules then I would be happy to share.
T- I can so see your face when you are saying all this....I think you should make it a topic on your blog! This is something you feel strongly about. I'm serious! Make your title, "Recipe Etiquette" and then list your views. I think it would be a great hit!
ReplyDeleteI don't think you're a recipe witch. I just don't think people understand why you feel the way you do about this issue. So I think it would be a great blog topic! You work very hard for your recipes and research and time so I understand where you're coming from. My recipes on the other hand, come easy....right off the internet or magazine that people could easily find anyway. That's why I'm so free. But the important ones....like Red Velvet Cake...uh uh, no, no no.......
Love you !
Holy Crap mom that cake was dang dang good but bouncing off the walls sweet and rich. And Ti you are so cute the way you have recipe ettique. Its just something you are passionate about and thats cool.
ReplyDeleteOh LOL!! T, I remember when someone made your recipe and told everyone that it was theirs! Ok, ya, see, that's messed up! And you are SO right about your recipe ettiquette! It's you, and I love it! I agree with Sheri, you should totally do a blog on it! Love you!
