I'm currently enrolled in Maggie Holmes photography class. If you never seen her work, you should go to her blog and check her out. Not only is she one fabulous photographer, she is also an amazing scrapbooker. I am learning so much. I've taken a previous class from the famous Karen Russell and learned a lot then too. I think it's just a combination of continuous learning that is helping me to finally get the light bulb to switch on! I am now taking pictures in full manual mode! YEAH! Learning how to set the aperture, shutter speed, ISO all on my own. That is great. I'm loving it.
Our last week's assignment was to take pictures in full manual mode. Getting the settings correct with the proper metering on the subject. Then to take the same picture but changing the settings to get the same result. I'm finally understanding the triangle! All three work together and when you change one thing, you then have to change the other setting to get the desired result.
I really wanted a cute subject this time! I'm tired of taking action shots of water in my sink or still life pumpkins! So, after church on Sunday, I grabbed my adorable nephew. Now, I knew this would be a challenge since he's an active young boy and is always off playing with his friends. It's no fun to let Aunt Sheri take pictures of you sitting still! So, I asked him if he would be my model. It was so cute when he responded, "I don't know what that is." I then said, "Well you just pose and let me take pictures of you." To which he replied, "I don't know how to do that...pose? What does that mean?" I laughed because it was just so innocent and cute. So then I decided to speak a language he understood. I told him that I would "hire" him to let me take pictures of him. Ah hah! That was the ticket! It's amazing what a kid will do for a couple of bucks!
So here's a few shots that I took of him. I then added some of Maggie's Photoshop actions to give them an urban feel.

"Are we done yet? My head is itching!"
And this is my favorite! He looks like such a young man! Thanks Alex! Whether you know what it is or not, you're a perfect model!

Love that you're in a new photog class and learning new things (always new stuff to learn everyday, huh?) Great pix of that darling nephew using manual mode. I'm going to check out your new Teach (what action was that, too?) Can't wait to see more of your homework!

Awesome photos Sheri! He is SO stinkin' cute--love that toothless grin. I am guessing these are all with the new camera?
ReplyDeleteHi Sheri- How are you?? I've been missing in action due to some family issues, but I'm back- and I can see I missed a lot here on your blog. I love the flowers in your last post, they're great!
ReplyDeleteAnd your nephew is very handsome. I love kids with both front teeth missing. My son's came out this summer, but they are already almost grown back. It's kind of sad!
Have a great week!
Oh, he is just SO adorable Sheri!
ReplyDeleteWhat fabulous photos.
I need to take some classes as well. Timing and cost seem to be against me.
Loves.
